Samsung Faces New Rival as Sony’s First 200MP Camera Sensor Nears Launch

Samsung is to face challenges in terms of camera sensors, as its rival brand, Sony, is all set to stand stronger with its first 200MP mobile camera sensor.

The Korean tech giant was the first in the tech market to introduce 200MP camera sensors for mobile devices. Meanwhile, now, a reliable Chinese tipster, Digital Chat Station, revealed that Sony is ready to introduce its first 200MP mobile camera sensor, which is the IMX09E.

According to the report, Sony’s IMX90E is to have a 1/1.2-inch size, which will result in an individual pixel size of 0.7 µm. The company is expected to build this sensor based on a 22 nm process node.

It will be compatible with several functionalities, such as Hybrid Frame HDR, an ultra-high dynamic range of 100 dB+, impressively improved photosensitivity, and will support 2x and 4x in-sensor zoom for near optical (lossless zoom) quality shots.

Sony will supply its latest 200MP camera sensor to Chinese brands for their upcoming flagship devices; for instance, the OPPO Find X9 Ultra and the Vivo X300 Ultra. A few rumors suggested that Samsung could also use this sensor for its next-generation Galaxy S26 Ultra; however, that’s not the real case.

Noticeably, Samsung’s 200MP camera sensor is the ISOCELL HP2 initially used in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which is a 1/1.4-inch sensor with 0.6 µm pixels. Thanks to Smart-ISO Pro (iDCG) and Dual Slope Gain (DSG) for improved photosensitivity and wider dynamic range. It will be interesting to see whether Sony’s 200MP camera sensor will stand strong against Samsung’s.
