God of War TV Show Finds Its New Kratos in Dave Bautista

The God of War TV show has a new candidate for its lead role. Dave Bautista is in talks to play Kratos in Amazon’s live-action adaptation, stepping in after Ryan Hurst’s exit from the part following a serious on-set injury. Variety first reported the talks, with Deadline and several other outlets confirming them within hours.

Bautista would take over a production that’s already been through a rough stretch. Hurst tore his bicep performing a stunt in late June 2026, four months into filming in Vancouver. The injury required surgery and a lengthy recovery, and Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television decided to recast the role entirely rather than wait for Hurst to heal.

God of War Kratos Recast – What We Know

Production paused immediately after Hurst’s injury. About two weeks later, Amazon and Sony settled on a recast rather than delaying the two-season shoot, according to Deadline and TheWrap. The roughly four episodes already filmed with Hurst will be reshot once the new Kratos is in place.

The current plan has the new actor beginning prep in mid-August, with production restarting in Vancouver by mid-October. Callum Vinson remains attached as young Atreus for season one, alongside Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and Alastair Duncan as Mimir.

Bautista brings a background suited to the physical demands of the role. He spent years as a professional wrestler before building a film career that includes Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and supporting parts in Dune and Blade Runner 2049. Nothing is finalized yet. Variety and Deadline both describe the deal as still in negotiation, not signed.

What This Means for the Show’s Timeline

A recast this deep into production is a costly setback. Reshooting four completed episodes, on top of building an entirely new performance around a different actor, pushes the realistic premiere further out. Estimates on an actual release date vary by outlet, with some pointing to 2027 and others suggesting the wait could stretch into 2028, depending on how quickly the new Kratos gets up to speed.

There’s also a second wave of casting news attached to this story. Reports from MP1st and Forbes indicate Amazon is planning to recast Atreus, and possibly Thrúd, for season two with older actors, since both characters age up significantly between the two seasons the show is adapting. That’s a separate decision from the Kratos recast, tied to the story’s time jump rather than an injury.

The show already has a two-season order from Amazon, and the plan remains to shoot both seasons back-to-back once production resumes. That approach should help keep the story’s tone consistent even with new faces stepping into key roles partway through.

What’s Next for God of War

Amazon hasn’t confirmed Bautista’s casting officially, and reps for the streamer declined to comment on the reports. Expect an announcement once the deal closes, likely followed by a new first-look image similar to the one Amazon released of Hurst back in February 2026.

Filming is set to pick back up in Vancouver in October, with Frederick E.O. Toye, who won an Emmy directing Shogun, still attached to helm the first two episodes. Ronald D. Moore remains showrunner on a series adapting the story of 2018’s God of War and its 2022 sequel, Ragnarok.
