With 2,500 mobile sites in Wales and the south-west of England, Samsung Electronics is assisting Vodafone with its extensive Open RAN implementation. A set of industry-wide standards that telecom vendors can adhere to when creating associated equipment enables an open RAN, or open radio access network. Open RAN makes it possible to do programmable, clever, disaggregated, virtualized, and interoperable tasks. With the help of South Korea’s virtualized RAN (vRAN) software and open radio technology, Vodafone began deploying its Open RAN network, starting in Devon.
Samsung will supply the O-RAN-compatible radios in the low and mid-bands, including its Massive MIMO radios, as well as its vRAN software that supports Multi-RAT spanning 4G and 5G technology. However, the business has successfully integrated its 64T64R Massive MIMO radios into Open RAN to indicate its capacity to tackle the task. As opposed to single-band radios, 64T64R Massive MIMO integration is more complex for 64T64R radios. Since the U.K.’s first 5G Open RAB site in Bath in January 2022, this is the biggest Open RAN rollout in the country and marks the latest achievement in the extended collaboration between Vodafone, Samsung, and a few other firms.
As a result, the Open RAN’s capacity in the commercial network of Vodafone UK outperformed conventional hardware-based RAN performance in metropolitan areas. In addition to that, Samsung reinforced the automation of the vRAN deployment process, simplifying the management of cell sites on a single platform. The implementation of Open RAN in Vodafone’s Exmouth and Torquay networks was subsequently backed by Samsung, and this took place in December 2022.
Samsung and DISH Wireless launched Virtual Open RAN 5G Network in the US
Junehee Lee, Executive Vice President, Head of Global Sales & Marketing, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, opened up: Now we are witnessing how innovative technologies like Open RAN and vRAN can further bolster 5G capabilities, creating new paths and possibilities for network evolution. Following this historic milestone in Europe, we will continue working together with Vodafone to take their Open RAN networks to new heights.”
Including downlink and uplink throughput for 4G and 5G, test results exceeded the anticipated KPIs. Through its market-leading product portfolio that ranges from vRAN 3.0 and Open RAN core to private network solutions and AI-powered automation tools, Samsung pushes the industry’s advancement of 5G networks.
