US Cloud Rule Targets China’s AI Ambitions

The U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo stated that “the Biden administration is now proposing requiring U.S. cloud companies, just to have an effect on foreign entities, that they are accessing the U.S. data centers to train AI models or not.”

In a general way, as per the control of the United States over exports of AI chips to China, the US is also giving chase to local cloud computing companies just to report overseas customer details. It seems that the only motive is to stop China from gearing up for AI models through cloud computing.

Basically, cloud computing just permits customers to use infrastructure and applications through the internet without even installing and maintaining them on-premises.

However, it is also a concern that by securing ‘computing power’ through cloud computing mechanisms, for instance, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, China may develop AI. The US is powering the exports only to stop China from securing the advanced chips, which are essential for developing AI. In other ways, it sounds like a do-or-die scenario for the US.
