Samsung Tests Open RAN Technology on Verizon Network in the US
Samsung Electronics announced that the ongoing Open RAN (O-RAN) conformance as well as interoperability testing for commercial-grade LTE and 5G NR radios for Verizon’s network is finally complete. By manipulating the extensive expertise of Samsung in the vRAN as well as the O-RAN world, both Verizon and Samsung decided to expand their collaboration, a step forward in favor of openness.
The brands used radios compliant with O-RAN specifications for the series of tests held in the Samsung lab in Dallas, Texas. The test included various Samsung radios, such as CAT-A 4TAR radios supporting 700/850 MHz and AWS/PCS bands, CAT-B 64T64R Massive MIMO C-Band radios, and 16T16R C-band and CBRS dual-band radios.
The results of tests show the power to handle advanced Massive MIMO radio integration of the Korean brand, which is complex enough for 64T64R Massive MIMO radio as compared to simple CAT-A radios. Also using Keysight Technologies of O-RAN deal-out unit (O-DU) emulator, the brands tested O-RAN mandatory and non-mandatory beamforming abilities in the similar Massive MIMO unit, which resulted in assured performance gains.
It appears that the new O-RAN networks will perform as expected while delivering the full capabilities that next-generation 5G solutions authorize. Back in 2021, the Korean brand supported the commercial launch of Verizon’s first 5G C-band networks with its vRAN solution. This surely helps to establish another milestone in 2022, along with Samsung successfully building the largest vRAN commercial network in the world. The collaboration between Samsung and Verizon continued, which reinforces their commitment to ORAN as well as their leadership in empowering virtualized open networks with greater flexibility, faster time-to-market, and unmatched performance.
The Korean giants have taken the lead in the successful delivery of 5G end-to-end solutions, including chipsets, radios, and cores. They have also driven the industry to advance 5G networks with their market-leading product portfolio, from vRAN 3.0, open RAN, and core to private network solutions and AI-powered automation tools.
