Samsung Decides to Supply Display Drive Chips For Apple’s OLED iPads
The Korean brand Samsung supplies Display Drive Chips (DDI) exclusively for OLED iPads from Apple.
Apple is actively gearing up to expand its iPad area by adding the next-generation iPads and the display driver chip (DDI) that will be fitted in the forthcoming OLED iPad, which will be exclusively provided by the Korean firm, as reports are unveiling. Although it seems highly strange to provide components to Apple alone, it can be hinted at as a recognition of the competitiveness of the DDI of the Korean giants.
Samsung supplies DDI to Apple, which includes the 11-inch iPad Pro and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models. Not only iPads, but iPhones also use Samsung Display OLED as well as Samsung Electronics DDI, since they offer supreme color and crisp visuals.
Here’s the question: DDI stands for what?
DDI stands for Display Driver Chip, which is a semiconductor integrated circuit. It is a kind of interface between a microprocessor or digital system and a display panel. It is also operated so that photos and videos will be capable of displaying on the screen.
Beyond question, the Korean giants are in the leading position in the DDI industry; this is speculated by the market share of 29.7% as of the third quarter of 2023 reported by Samsung Electronics DDI.
DDI controls the pixels of a display for realizing a vast range of colors, and it is measured as a key component that determines the performance of the finished product as well as the display. It is expected that this year, quite possibly, 9 million to 10 million units of OLED iPads may ship. Among iPads, only Pro variants are fitted with OLED, so it is less than the total sales of iPads and iPhones.
