Android Auto gets NACS charging support for Non-Tesla EVs
Google is expanding the functionalities of Android Auto as it is rolling out an update that offers enhanced support for electric vehicles that use the NACS charging standard found at Tesla charging stations.
A couple of months ago, Android Auto introduced a new convenient setting that permits Google Maps to tailor the experience to electric vehicles using particular types of chargers. At the debut, this new “Electric vehicle settings” menu supported J1772, CCS (Combo 1 and 2), Type 2, and CHAdeMo, but lacked the NACS standard that was expanding at the time.
Now the company has released a new update to add that support. Currently Android Auto received a new beta update with the version number 12.9.143804. The beta version arrives with support for NACS chargers in non-Tesla eclectic vehicles.
Now you can toggle your vehicle using a NACS charger and more easily find charging stations through Google Maps. EVs using Android Automotive won’t be directly affected here, as charging settings are separate on that platform versus the phone-based Android Auto experience.
A couple of days ago, GM approved an NACS adapter for its electric vehicles. This is a beneficial development, as Android Auto users can now choose between using the NACS charger with the new adapter or the CCS plug built into their vehicle. Currently, the update is rolling out in the beta stage.
