Samsung Edges Past Apple to Lead Global Smartphone Market in Q3

Samsung and Apple are the two biggest rivals of each other in the tech industry. Now both brands stand at the top of the global smartphone market in Q3 2024 together.

Samsung introduced the Galaxy S24 earlier this year; meanwhile, Apple recently introduced its latest iPhone 16 series. 2024 is the countable year for both brands in terms of introducing a flagship series.

According to a Canalys report, Samsung and Apple are close together when it comes to market share, as both brands achieved 18% market share in the third quarter of 2024. Fortunately, the firm gave the lead to Samsung. This means that on the percent level, both brands scored 18, but since only one has to lead, which is Samsung here.

Going back to the same period in 2023, Samsung had a 21% market share in the third quarter of 2023, and Apple had a 17% share. This means that Samsung’s market share fell 3%, and Apple earned 1% more. However, still, the Korean company is leading the market.

Apart from these two brands, Xiaomi reserved 14% market share, OPPO and Vivo have 9% market share, and the rest of the 32% belongs to other brands.

Canalys analyst Runar Bjørhovde stated, “Apple achieved its highest third-quarter volume to date and has never been closer to leading the global smartphone market in a Q3 than now.”

The iPhone 16 series had a limited impact on the quarter as it was only available for three days in Q3.
