Finally, Samsung has won a preliminary victory against a major Chinese display manufacturer, BOE, in its patent infringement case.
The US International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled in favor of Samsung since it determined that BOE had illegally used Samsung’s OLED technology. This development marks an efficient milestone in the ongoing legal battle between Samsung and BOE.
According to a report from The Elec, Samsung has secured a preliminary win against BOE but is still the final judgment. The ITC’s decision to permit imports of BOE panels, despite finding patent infringement, hints that the battle between Samsung and BOE is long-lasting.
It’s expected that the final decision of the case could be finalized in March 2025, and it’s anticipated that the result will have efficient implications for the global display industry. To stand strong against Samsung, BOE has managed to score major clients such as Apple by meeting its iPhone and iPad demands; for instance, the iPhone SE 4 could feature BOE’s display.
In case the result goes against BOE imports, then the release of the iPhone SE 4 could be delayed indefinitely. Although Apple is not the only brand that deals with BOE, Samsung has even used BOE panels.
Noticeably, if the court rules against BOE, this could result in several issues for phone and smartphone manufacturers that rely on BOE for screens, and this could lead to delays in phone releases and potentially boost prices.
