Google will ditch Samsung modems over MediaTek for the Tensor chipset to power its forthcoming Pixel 10 series.
Google is gearing up to introduce its next-generation Pixel 10 smartphones, which are expected to shift to MediaTek for the modems inside the upcoming Tensor chipset. However, since the initial Tensor chipset was used to power the Pixel 6, Google used Samsung modems in its Pixel smartphones, so it will be a major step.
Now, a new report from Android Authority says that Google chose a MediaTek modem for the Pixel 10 series instead of Samsung. The reason behind this step is an overheating issue; Samsung modems used in those older Tensor chipsets were prone to overheating and caused inconvenience to users.
Previously, it was reported that Google is looking for other options to replace Samsung for manufacturing the Tensor chipset. Now finally Google is going with MediaTek and ditching Samsung to manufacture next-gen Tensor chips.
The latest modem will be based on MediaTek’s M85 modem IP; apart from this, there’s a lack of enough details regarding the upcoming modem, but it is expected to deliver better performance as compared to the modems used in Google’s older Tensor chips. Cost is another reason why Google went with MediaTek instead of Samsung and Qualcomm, since both of these brands are more expensive. It remains to be seen whether this step will affect Samsung’s legacy.
