Samsung’s Big Opportunity to Lead the AR Headset Segment

Samsung at the Galaxy Unpacked event introduced its latest smart glasses and teased the XR headset. Now one of its rivals, Apple, is stepping back from the competition, which will be a significant chance for Samsung to lead in the AR headset segment.

A new report from Bloomberg claimed that Apple has decided to cancel its AR glasses project, which would look similar to normal glasses but with integrated displays for AR features, and the glasses would have asked for a connection to a Mac.

Reportedly, the reason behind stepping back is Apple wanted these glasses to chart a new path for the company in the AR segment, following the weak market response for the $3,499 Vision Pro headset. Noticeably, Apple has found it a challenge to bring together the right technology at the right cost, at least for now.

On the other side, the Korean tech giant is aggressively working on launching its latest Project Moohan AR headset potentially by the end of this year to stand strong against Vision Pro. The AR smart glasses are anticipated to go live sometime in the second half of the year with an initial production run of 500,000 units.

According to the report, they will be based on Qualcomm’s AR1 chipset and an APU from NXP. Since Samsung’s biggest rival already decided to step back from the competition, it could be slightly more efficient for it to lead the market.
