Samsung and BOE could partner after mutually resolving a time-honored legal dispute over OLED technology. Now both the firms are considering expanding their LCD partnership.
A few years back, in 2022, Samsung Display filed a case with the US International Trade Commission (ITC), claiming that BOE had infringed its OLED patents; however, a year later, in October 2023, the company accused BOE of stealing trade secrets by hiring employees who had access to confidential OED technology, and since then to now the legal battle has carried on.
Nevertheless, recently it was reported that both of these firms came to a mutual belief that fair competition is more crucial for the display industry and decided to drop all ongoing lawsuits worldwide.
Meanwhile, a new report from Yonhap News Agency revealed that BOE and Samsung are expecting to expand their LCD partnership. As BOE Chairman Chen Yanshun recently visited Samsung’s headquarters in Suwon, Seoul, where he met with Yong Seok-woo, head of Samsung’s visual display business, to discuss expanding BOE’s supply of LCD panels to the Korean firm.
Currently, it remains unclear the number of LCD panel orders Samsung offered to BOE. Usually, Samsung doesn’t offer more than 35% of its total LCD panel requirements to any single vendor to supply; this means that BOE’s chance to get the order is up to 35%.
Samsung has yet to release any official statement regarding this expected partnership; it remains to be seen what will happen next.
