Samsung One UI 7 Separates Notification Panel and Quick Settings for Better Usability
Samsung has released a commendable update for the Galaxy smartphone ecosystem, the One UI 7, which is currently going live for Galaxy S24 owners. Although the latest version spilled away a lot of new and interesting features, Samsung has even brought back an older capability of a detached notification panel from the Quick Settings, but in an impressive way.
While the capability to separate the notification panel from the Quick Settings existed years ago, where the users could access their phone’s notifications panel by swiping down from one corner at the top, while another swipe would open the Quick Settings, Samsung brought it back, and it’s very well implemented in Galaxy devices with One UI 7.
Although Google merged both the notification panel and Quick Settings with the Android 6.0 version (Marshmallow), letting users quickly open up the notification panel just by swiping down twice the Quick Settings, reducing the need to use two fingers to access the notification panel.
With Android 15-based One UI 7, Samsung moves forward to a separated notification panel that will not allow users to get into the Quick Settings straight away. Whereas the key highlights of Samsung splitting the notification panel from the Quick Settings is that the notifications don’t have any behavioral changes, as people will be able to dismiss their notifications by swiping both the left and the right side of the screen, with swiping to the left side in the blank space will let you open the Quick Settings, on one hand.
Alternatively, the gesture for stretching down the notifications and Quick Settings from the top of the screen is way better and smoother. While the other Android brands follow the ratio of 50-50, Samsung has adopted a different move where the notification panel takes up roughly 75% of the swipe area, and the Quick Settings occupy the remaining 25% of the swipe area.
Moreover, this pattern of separating the notification panel from the Quick Settings is entirely optional, and users can easily revert back to the merged form by changing the settings and tapping the “Together” option.
