Samsung Secures First 2nm AI Chip From Japan & Tense TSMC

Samsung and TSMC are undoubtedly the toughest competitors in the race to manufacture cutting-edge chips. In the meantime, Samsung won the first 2nm AI chip mass production contract from PFN of Japan and left TSMC in the corner.

PFN and TSMC have been collaborating since 2016, but this time things appear different because now it has decided to produce its next-generation AI chips on Samsung’s 2 nm node. And the reports are saying that TSMC is the leader in the contract chipmaking arena, grabbing the most business from Apple and Qualcomm.

There’s no need to elaborate; Samsung Electronics is the largest memory chipset maker worldwide, and now it has won its first 2nm AI chip production contract from Japanese startup Preferred Networks. By these metrics, it appears that Samsung will make AI accelerators as well as other AI chips, along with its latest 2nm chip processing technology for PFN.

It is also appearing that this new partnership in the industry will surely benefit both, as PFN probably gets access to newer chip technologies, which will permit it to gain an edge over the competition. Whereas the Korean giants against TSMC have secured actual customers for its most advanced chip technology.

Noticeably, the Korean officials have decided to confirm their deal with PFN, but an analyst confirms that PFN may sign a U-turn in favor of Samsung, opening the door for more important clients to sign with the Korean chipmaker. Samsung has extremely confirmed that next year, in 2025, it will begin mass production of the 2nm process for mobile applications and will also apply the same advanced technology to high-performance computing chips for supercomputers and computer clusters in 2026 and then to automotive chips in 2027.
