Android 16 to be called Baklava

Google’s signature dessert nomenclature for its every Android OS iteration is like a tradition that the company follows each year. However, this 15-year long-running sweet dish naming streak is finally ending right here with the upcoming Android 16, as it was already hinted earlier with the AOSP code.

Meanwhile, another confirmation reveals that the forthcoming Android 16 is not following the alphabetical sweet dish naming; rather, its initials will begin with B, with the codename “Baklava.”

Up until Android 15, Google has followed the dessert naming of its Android OS version alphabetically; nevertheless, AOSP source strings suggested that this tradition might change. The next Android OS, Android 16, will not follow its dessert naming alphabetically; rather, its initials will begin with “B” right after Android 15’s “V.”.

Meanwhile, tipster Mishaal Rahman took it to X, which confirms this change in the sweet dish naming alphabet of Android 16. The report suggested that the most recent entry within the Android source code string significantly reveals the official codename of the upcoming Android version, and its name will be after a Turkish sweet dish, Baklava.

To recall, earlier reports suggested that Google had finalized the SDK (software development kit) version and its codename for Android 15 when it reached its platform stability phase, though, which converted the Android 15 codename to “Vanilla IceCream.” Thus, via the Android SDK version and codename string, Android 16 is all set to arrive with a new dessert naming, Baklava.

In conclusion, the new sweet dish name for the Android 16 version as Baklava might sound weird, but it perfectly suits the technical terms of Google and its Android platform development procedure.
