Samsung’s movable camera phone patent reminds older Galaxy A80

Samsung filed a patent back on 10 January 2022 and it has recently been approved that allows the camera to move between the front and back of a display. 

Initially, Samsung Display filed a patent in 2022, identified as D1066344, and has now been registered with the US Designs. It details a unique display featuring a repositionable camera system that permits cameras to be moved between the front and back depending on the mode of use. 

Reportedly, the newly approved patent describes a display device equipped with a dual-position camera mechanism and also showcases one configuration where the camera system is positioned on the front and another where it moves to the back. Potentially this camera setup will function for both photography and capturing selfies or video conferencing.

Reportedly, this design is expected to be integrated into a foldable or rollable display phone that Samsung may introduce in the future time. Noticeably, the patent document hints at a Samsung phone with a repositionable camera, bringing back the memories of the Galaxy A80 smartphone launched in 2019. 

The figures in the patent illustrate several viewpoints hints the design’s adaptability. However, currently, the design is under patent which does not guarantee a commercial release, so it remains to see whether the design will come into existence.
